ORIGINS: Many origins depending on what area they were native to.

BREED PROFILE: Horses have been used in warfare almost since their domestication. The horse is undoubtedly the most influential of all domestic animals in its role in shaping history and civilizations. Horses used in warfare were as varied as the regions that they came from. Most were much smaller than the modern horses of today and were prized for their swiftness, both in carrying riders and chariots into battle. The most easily recognized War Horse was from the Middle Ages. These were developed from the 8th century and were of a heavy cob type, very useful for carrying knights in heavy armor. Some of today’s modern breeds, such as the Hanoverian and Holstein can be traced back to these early War Horses.

CHARACTERISTICS: Many types including the swift Oriental and Iberian types as well as the heavy draft types of more Northern regions. Must have possessed a willing and courageous attitude. Many were highly prized and honored by their owners and can be found in paintings, writings and engravings throughout history.
